How to brew Hario V60

The V60 is a fantastic and simple to use coffee-making method that brings out the cleanest flavour from your coffee. The name V60 derives from the dripper's design: the cone is V-shaped and has a 60° angle. The dripper spread across the world after the 2010 World Brewers Cup in London and is now synonymous with the highest standards of craft in coffee making equipment.

The 60° angle allows water to flow through all parts of coffee resulting in the evenly extracted cup of coffee. A big hole at the bottom enables the brewer to adjust the flavour of the coffee according to the speed of water flow.

Brewing!

  1. Place the paper filter in the brewer. Pour hot water around the inside of the filter. This helps to reduce any paper taste and warm up the dripper. Take the dripper off of your mug and discard the rinse water.
  2. Add the coffee carefully to the centre of the V60 and shake gently to level the bed of grounds, place the brewer on top of the jug, place it on the scale and set it to zero.
  3. Start the timer and slowly pour about twice as much water as coffee ( 36ml / g ), start in the middle and pour in a circular motion towards the edges to ensure complete and even saturation of grounds. Carefully stir with the spoon to make sure all the grounds are wet.
  4. Let the coffee bloom for 45 seconds.
  5. Gently pour the remaining water until you’ve added a total of 300ml. Pour using a circular motion directly on the coffee and not the walls.
  6. Once you reach the desired amount of 300ml (300g) gently stir again with the spoon this will stop the coffee from sticking to the walls of the v60.
  7. Now, let it drip until finished, allow all the water to drain through the filter until the bed of coffee looks dry.
  8. Remove the brewer from the Jug and enjoy the coffee.

Tips

The taste of your coffee can be affected several things. If you are not satisfied with the result of your brew, think about what you would change. Try to adjust grind size to change the flavours of the coffee. Under extracted coffee will likely taste weak and sour - try grinding coffee more finely. Over extracted coffee will likely taste bitter -try your next brew using a slightly coarser grind. With these small adjustments, you will be able to find the best grind settings for the coffee you enjoy.
