Father Petronilo Martinez and son, Petronilo Jesus Martinez, manage their two small farms together, Fincas Los Petros and El Aguacatal, in the village of Hoja Blanca. Petronilo’s father, Gumercindo Martir Martinez, was one of the very first coffee producers in the valley in 1958 and left the farm to Petronilo. Since then, Petronilo has been deeply involved in growing the market access for smallholder producers in the valley. By 1966, he had already bought 6 additional hectares, and producing 300 quintales of parchment. Petronilo now has a large and wonderfully unified family who are deeply involved in the coffee industry at different levels, from award-winning producer son-in-law Aurelio Villatoro to his son Petronilo, a forestry engineer and farm manager.
